  • Chapter 22. Use of external luminous and audible devices of vehicles

    • 162. When moving at night-time and/or upon insufficient visibility of the road regardless of its lighting, the vehicle must have the following luminous devices turned on:
    • 162.1. driving lamps or passing lamps — on a power-driven vehicle;
    • 162.2. lights and/or lamps — on a cycle;
    • 162.3. position lights — on a trailer and also on a towed power-drive vehicle in the absence or malfunction of hazard warning lights.
    • 163. Driving lamps must be switched off and passing lamps switched on:
    • 163.1. in a built-up area, if the road is lighted;
    • 163.2. when a driver is about to pass another vehicle at a distance of not less than 300 meters to the vehicle, and also at a larger distance, if the driver of the oncoming vehicle shows the necessity for that by periodic switching of lamps;
    • 163.3. when driving lamps will light the vehicle moving in the same direction, or its driver shows, by turning on hazard warning lights, the necessity of such switching;
    • 163.4. in any other cases to exclude the possibility of dazzling of the drivers of both oncoming and passing vehicles. When being dazzled, the driver must immediately turn on hazard warning lights and, without switching lanes, slow down and stop.
    • 164. When standing, parking at night-time on unlighted sections of the road and/or upon its insufficient visibility (except for residential areas), the vehicle must have positions lamps or parking lamps turned on.
    • 165. Fog lamps of the vehicle may be used by the driver:
    • 165.1. at night-time and/or upon insufficient road visibility jointly with passing lamps or driving lamps;
    • 165.2. instead of passing lamps in the conditions provided by clauses 166 and 167 of these Rules.
    • 166. In the daytime passing lamps or daytime running lamps (if available) must be turned on to indicate the moving vehicle:
    • 166.1. on motorcycle and moped;
    • 166.2. while moving in the transport column;
    • 166.3. on a route vehicle moving on an especially reserved lane in the direction opposite to the traffic;
    • 166.4. when organized carriage of a group of children is carried out;
    • 166.5. when carrying dangerous goods, traffic of heavy and/or bulky vehicles;
    • 166.6. in the process of towing (on a towing vehicle);
    • 166.7. while training to drive a power-driven vehicle on roads;
    • 166.8. on power-driven vehicles when organizing their temporary traffic on the lane reserved for oncoming traffic;
    • 166.9. within the period of holding by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of republic-wide special complex events on ensuring road traffic safety, envisioning the traffic of vehicles in the daytime with turned-on passing lamps or daytime running lamps (if available).
    • 167. When road visibility of the vehicle on the road decreases, in order to indicate it while driving in the daytime, passing lamps or daytime running lamps (if available) may be turned on.
    • 168. Spot lamp and pilot lamp are allowed to be used only outside built-up areas in the absence of oncoming vehicles. In built-up areas such lamps may only be used by drivers of operative-service vehicles while carrying out a service task.
    • 169. Rear fog lights on vehicles may be applied only in case of insufficient road visibility.
    • 170. The identification sign “Road-train” must be turned on during the road-train movement, and at the night-time on unlighted road sections and/or upon its insufficient visibility, in addition, and for the time of standing or parking.
    • 171. Beacon lights of orange colour must be turned on:
    • 171.1. on a vehicle, self-propelled machine while performing repair and other works on the road;
    • 171.2. on a vehicle carrying dangerous goods, on a heavy and/or bulky vehicle;
    • 171.3. on a power-driven vehicle carrying out the escort at the transportation of heavy and/or bulky load;
    • 171.4. on a power-driven vehicle specially designated for the transportation of damaged and defective vehicles, during their loading, transportation and unloading;
    • 171.5. on a power-driven vehicle, specially designated in accordance with the requirements of technical normative legal acts for the transportation of groups of children to the educational institutions, during picking up (setting down) of passengers;
    • 171.6. on a self-propelled machine during its movement on the road.
    • 172. Sound signals may be used only for:
    • 172.1. warning of other drivers about the intention to make overtaking outside built-up areas;
    • 172.2. preventing a road accident.
    • 173. In order to warn about an overtaking instead of a sound signal (or together with it) there a light signal may be given, which represents in the daytime periodic short turning on and off of lamps, and at night-time — the periodic switching on of passing and driving lamps.
