The number of lanes for traffic of vehicles (except for tramways and single-track vehicles) is determined by the traffic signs “Directions of movement on the lanes”, “Direction of movement on the lane”, “Direction of movement on the lanes” and/or a horizontal road markings, and if none is provided, by the drivers themselves with regard to the width of the carriageway, dimensions of vehicles and necessary lateral spacing between them.
In the absence of the road signs and road marking, the half of the carriageway width located on the left, is deemed to be its oncoming side. On the road with one-way traffic the half of the carriageway width located on the left, is deemed to be the left side of the carriageway.
-
76.
On the two-way road, if there are two or more lanes in the direction of travel, it is prohibited to enter the oncoming traffic lane.
-
77.
On the two-way road having three lanes marked with horizontal road marking (except the horizontal marking 1.9), from which the middle lane is used for traffic in both directions, switching to this lane is allowed only for overtaking, bypass of an obstruction, left turn or U-turn, in doing so left turn or U-turn must be performed from this lane. Switching to the oncoming outer left lane is prohibited.
-
78.
If the road signs prohibit traffic of cyclists, horseback riders and animal-drawn vehicles, drivers must drive vehicles preferably as close to the right edge of the carriageway as possible (lines of horizontal road marking 1.2 indicating the edge of the carriageway).
If there is no such prohibition, drivers must drive the vehicle, if possible, closer to the left edge, within the limits of outer right lane.
-
79.
When moving, switching to another traffic lane is allowed only before overtaking, advancing, bypassing an obstruction, turning left or right, making a U-turn or stopping. In doing so:
-
79.1.
outside the built-up areas, it is prohibited to occupy left lanes if the right ones are free ;
-
79.2.
with three or more lanes in one direction, it is permitted to occupy the outer left lane only when all other lanes are occupied, or for advancing, bypassing obstructions, turning left or right, and also for stopping, parking on the left side of the one-way road in the instance provided in sub-clause 138.3 of clause 138 of these Rules;
-
79.3.
with three or more lanes in one direction, it is prohibited to perform switching to the outer right lane with the purpose of advancing on;
-
79.4.
goods vehicles with a technically permissible total mass of over 3.5 tonnes, wheeled tractors and self-propelled machines may switch to other lanes to the left of the second lane only to bypass obstructions, left turn or U-turn, and also for standing, parking on the left side of the one-way road in the instance referred to in sub-clause 138.3 of clause 138 of these Rules;
-
79.5.
in built-up areas route vehicles must move on the lane reserved for them, and if none — on the outer right lane. Switching to other traffic lanes is allowed only for bypassing an obstruction, turning left or U-turn. Route vehicles are allowed to advance vehicles travelling on the outer right lane with a speed of below 40 km/h on the second lane on the right;
-
79.6.
in case of a congestion preventing the movement of operative-service vehicles, drivers must ensure a “safe passage” on which only the mentioned vehicles may pass. For that purpose vehicles situated on the outer left lane must occupy the far right position in this lane.
-
80.
Vehicles the maximum speed of which must not exceed 40 km/h or which, due to technical reasons, cannot move with a higher speed in comparison with the mentioned one, must move on the outer right lane except for the cases of overtaking, advancing, bypassing an obstruction or switching before making a turn or U-turn.
-
81.
Motion on tramway railways for traffic in the same direction, located on the left on the same level with the carriageway, is allowed only for advancing (outside the marked and regulated intersections), bypassing an obstruction, provided that all lanes are in this direction are occupied, and for turning left or making a U-turn in accordance with clause 64 of these Rules. In doing so, it is prohibited to enter a tramway railway of the oncoming direction and travel on it, and also movement on tramway rails for the passing direction, if there is a boarding area separated by structural means over the carriageway, from which picking up (setting down) of passengers into the tramway.
-
82.
On a road the carriageway of which is divided into lanes by lines of horizontal road marking, the traffic of vehicles must be performed strictly following these lines. Crossing the broken lines of horizontal road marking is allowed only in case of manoeuvring.
-
83.
When turning to a road where the traffic may be reversed, the driver must drive the vehicle, so that, when clearing the crossing of carriageways, the vehicle takes the outer right lane. Switching lanes may be performed only after the driver makes sure that the movement in this direction is permitted also on other lanes.
-
84.
The movement of vehicles on verges, pavements, cycle paths, footpaths and tracks for horseback riders is prohibited, except for the cases specified in part two of clause 26, clauses 68, 138, 148, 152 and sub-clause 160.2 of clause 160 of these Rules. The movement on the specified elements of the road is allowed for vehicles of road maintenance service and communal service, motor vehicles with oblique white stripe on the sides, as well as for other vehicles servicing trade and other organizations located directly at the verges, sidewalks, cycle paths, footpaths, tracks for horseback riders or pedestrian areas, in the absence of other possibilities for entrance. In doing so the traffic safety must be ensured.
-
85.
The driver is obliged to keep such a distance from the vehicle travelling ahead of him that permits to avoid a collision in case of its emergency braking or stopping, and a necessary lateral spacing, ensuring the safety of traffic concerning vehicles standing or moving on adjacent lanes.
-
86.
On the road outside the built-up area, the driver of the vehicle more than 10 meters long or the maximum speed of which must not exceed 40 km/h or which, due to technical reasons, cannot move with a higher speed in comparison with the mentioned one, must keep a distance between his vehicle and vehicles moving ahead of him, which allows vehicles overtaking them to switch without obstruction to the lane they occupied earlier.
This rule does not apply in cases where drivers of mentioned vehicles overtake or prepare for overtaking, as well as in case of driving in a column of three or more vehicles marked with identification signs “Column”, and in an organized transport column.
