  • Chapter 13. Passing intersections

    • 100. When turning left or right, the driver is obliged to give way to pedestrians passing (crossing) the carriageway of the road (on a pedestrian crossing, and if none — along the line of pavements or verges), into which he turns and also to cyclist and horseback riders, crossing it accordingly on a cycle track and a track for horseback riders.
    • 101. It is prohibited to enter the intersection if there is a congestion that will force the driver to stop.
    • 102. Intersection where the sequence of movement is determined by signals of the authorized official directing traffic or traffic lights is a regulated intersection.

Upon an amber flashing signal of the traffic lights, non-working traffic lights and absence of the authorized official directing traffic, the intersection is unregulated, and drivers are obliged to follow the rules of driving in unregulated intersections and priority road signs. Traffic lights are deemed to be non-working if there are no signals on all traffic lights for a given direction or the signals are contradictory.

    • 103. When turning left or making a U-turn on a green traffic light signal, the driver of the vehicle, except a tramway, must give way to oncoming vehicles moving directly or to the right and to a passing tramway. The same rule must be followed by the tramway drivers between them.
    • 104. When moving in the direction of an arrow, turned on in an additional section at the same time with amber and red signal of traffic lights, the driver is obliged to give way to vehicles, moving from other directions.

Upon a turned-on arrow of an additional section of the traffic lights (simultaneously with prohibitory signal), the driver located on the outer lane of the carriageway must keep on moving in the direction of this arrow, if his stop can create an obstruction for movement of vehicles following him on the same lane, unless another order of road traffic for vehicles is determined by road signs “Directions of movement on the lanes”, “Direction of movement on the lane” or relevant horizontal road marking.

    • 105. If the signals of the authorized official directing traffic or traffic lights allow simultaneous movement of a tramway and other vehicles, than the tramway has a priority regardless of the direction of its movement. When moving in the direction of the arrow turned on in an additional section simultaneously with the red or amber signal of traffic lights, the driver of the tramway is obliged to give way to vehicles moving from other directions.
    • 106. The driver who entered the intersection upon an authorizing signal of traffic lights must clear the intersection in the intended direction regardless of a signal of traffic lights at the exit from the intersection, in doing so he is obliged to give way to oncoming vehicles travelling straight ahead or to the right. If at the intersection before the traffic lights located on the route of the driver, there is a traffic sign “Stop Line” (line of horizontal road marking 1.12), the driver is obliged to be guided by the signals of each of the traffic lights.
    • 107. Upon turning on of the authorizing signal of traffic lights, the driver must give way to vehicles that finish the movement through the intersection and pedestrians who have not finished crossing of the carriageway.
    • 108. At the intersection of unequal roads, the driver of the vehicle travelling on the minor road must give way to vehicles approaching him on the priority road, regardless of the direction of their further movement.
    • 109. In case when the priority road changes its direction at the intersection, drivers of vehicles moving along the priority road must be guided among them by the rules of passing the intersections of equal roads. The same rules shall be followed by driver of vehicles moving on the minor road.
    • 110. At the intersection of equal roads the driver of the vehicle, except a tramway, must give way to vehicle approaching from the right. The same rule must be followed by the tramway drivers between them. At such intersections the driver of a tramway has a priority over other vehicles (except tramways) regardless of the direction of its movement.
    • 111. When turning left or making a U-turn, the driver of a vehicle is obliged to give way to oncoming vehicles travelling on the equal road straight ahead or to the right, and to a passing tramway. The same rule must be followed by the tramway drivers between them. If there is a right to proceed for several vehicles, drivers of tramways have priority over other vehicles (except tramways) regardless of the direction of their movement.
    • 112. If the driver cannot determine the priority order for passing the intersection (because of the inability to recognize the presence of the roadway surface (night-time, mud, snow, etc.) or there is no road priority sign in the direction of movement), he must act as if he was on a minor road.
    • 113. At regulated intersections the information sections with lunar-white flashing signals on a black background or informational panels of white colour with black symbols may be applied. Informational sections or panels may be placed under the right additional section of transport traffic lights or before the pedestrian crossing together with road signs “Pedestrian crossing”. Informational section or panel does not change the significance of signals of traffic lights, requirements of road signs, these Rules and additionally warns drivers about the necessity to give way to pedestrians, cyclists and tramway drivers.
